A folder custodian is the person who holds your bound inheritance folder between annual reviews. They do not need to understand cryptocurrency — they need to be reliable, reachable, and willing to follow instructions.
Qualities to Look For
Geographic stability. A custodian who relocates frequently creates revision work. Choose someone likely to remain at a consistent address.
Willingness to store physically. The folder is paper. It needs a dry, secure location — a home safe, a bank safe deposit box, or an attorney’s file cabinet.
Clear communication. Your executor will contact this person. They should answer phone calls and understand they hold documentation, not assets.
What to Tell Your Custodian
Explain that the folder contains instructions and contacts, not keys or passwords. Tell them who the executor is and when they should expect to be contacted. Provide our office number in case they have questions about folder structure.
Custodian Letters
We prepare a signed custodian letter during setup sessions. It states what the custodian holds, when they received it, and who to contact if the folder must be released. This letter lives inside the folder and is updated at each annual review.
